Today, The Weekly Standard reported that Alison Lundergan Grimes’s campaign, whom EMILY’s List endorsed, responded to a question on her position on partial-birth abortion with an answer that EMILY’s List might not like: “Alison opposes late-term abortions.”
When THE WEEKLY STANDARD asked the Grimes campaign how the candidate would vote on a federal 20-week abortion limit, Grimes campaign press secretary Charly Norton wrote in an email: “Alison opposes late-term abortions.”
However, in 2013, Grimes told The Huffington Post’s Howard Fineman that she was “pro-choice down the line on abortion.”
In a wide-ranging, half-hour interview, Grimes, the Kentucky secretary of state and presumptive Democratic Senate nominee for 2014, told me that she was pro-choice down the line on abortion, and that she would delay the Affordable Care Act’s requirement that small businesses provide medical coverage to their employees.
Where does EMILY’s List stand on Grimes’s new position on partial-birth abortion? Will they un-endorse her like they did when Blanche Lincoln came out in favor of a ban on partial-abortion?
EMILY’s List members are deeply committed to electing pro-choice Democratic women whom we trust to stand up for our rights, treat us honestly, and make us proud. Our candidates fight for us every day. Blanche Lincoln failed to hold up her end of the bargain.
Since she wasn’t there for us, we won’t be there for her.
Grimes’s vagueness on the issues is nothing new. In October 2013, the Lexington Herald Leader’s Sam Youngman wrote that with “major national issues playing out,” “Grimes has been all but missing in action.”
