Is This Fair Claire? McCaskill Gets Rich From $1.17 Trillion Stimulus Bill

Claire’s Husband Received Nearly $1 million in Stimulus Dollars, While Missourians Got No Jobs and More Debt

WASHINGTON – As she today embarks on a  so-called fairness tour to fight for “struggling Missouri families,” Claire McCaskill should take this opportunity to explain to Missourians how she avoided similar struggles by helping write the $1.17 trillion stimulus bill which was used to line her own pockets.

McCaskill’s husband operates or has direct financial interest in various projects which received payments totaling $966,270 in stimulus funds. McCaskill admits that she and her husband “share everything – assets, children, and a house.  Some have implied that the assets of my family don’t belong to me. That notion is pretty archaic.”

“It should come as no surprise after she failed to pay taxes on her private jet, but Claire McCaskill lining her own pockets with stimulus funds that burdened Missourians with more debt is the antithesis of fair,” said Nate Hodson, American Crossroads director of state and regional media relations.  “Whether it’s her failure to pay taxes on her private jet or using stimulus funds to enrich herself, Claire McCaskill is an expert at exploiting her position in Washington to help herself while hard-working Missourians continue to suffer.”

McCaskill Said She And Shepard “Share Everything,” Including Assets. “‘My husband and I are a team,’ [Claire McCaskill] said. ‘We are married, and we share everything — assets, children and a house. The money I’ve loaned to my campaign is my money. My family is supportive of my efforts. Some have implied that the assets of my family don’t belong to me. That notion is pretty archaic.’” (Terry Ganey, “McCaskill Campaigns Hard, Stresses Her Qualifications for State’s Top Job,” St. Louis Post Dispatch, 7/18/04)

McCaskill Was “One Of The Architects” Of The Senate Stimulus Compromise Bill. “The debate over the economic stimulus bill moved from the Capitol to the talk shows once again on Sunday as Democrats and Republicans held their rhetorical lines and illustrated the continued partisan deadlock that the White House may have to break this week. … Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.), one of the architects of the $827 billion Senate compromise, said several of the programs Senators stripped were better fit for an omnibus appropriations bill.” (Jackie Kucinich, “Lawmakers Continue To Dig In On Stimulus,” CongressNow, 2/8/09)

McCaskill Voted To Approve The Stimulus Bill, Which Included An Estimated $1.17 Trillion In Spending Increases And Raised The Federal Deficit To $12.104 Trillion. (H.R. 1, CQ Vote #64: Adopted 60-38: R 3-38; D 55-0; I 2-0, 2/13/09, McCaskill Voted Yea)
