So Much for Obama’s Lobbyist Ban – White House Hires Lobbyist as Chief Domestic Policy Advisor

More typical Washington behavior, as President breaks promise and hires former lobbyist to set his domestic agenda.

WASHINGTON – When President Obama yesterday hired former lobbyist Cecilia Munoz to lead his Domestic Policy Council, he broke his promise that lobbyists would not work in the White House during his administration.

While on the campaign trail in 2007, Obama promised, “When I am President, they [lobbyists] won’t find a job in my White House.”  He also pledged that he would keep lobbyists from “setting the agenda in Washington.”

But yesterday, Obama hired a former lobbyist to set the agenda for domestic policy, including education, energy, and health care.

“This is more typical Washington behavior from Barack Obama – promising change and delivering broken promises,” said American Crossroads communications director Jonathan Collegio. “Instead of leading, Obama keeps breaking his promises and disappointing the American people who thought he would change the culture in Washington.”

Barack Obama:  More Broken Promises in Washington

Obama: “When I Am President, [Lobbyists] Won’t Find A Job In My White House.” OBAMA: “One year from now, we have the chance to tell all those corporate lobbyists that the days of them setting the agenda in Washington are over. I have done more to take on lobbyists than any other candidate in this race – and I’ve won. I don’t take a dime of their money, and when I am President, they won’t find a job in my White House.” (Sen. Barack Obama, Remarks At A Campaign Event, Spartanburg, SC, 11/3/07)

Munoz Was A Registered Lobbyist For La Raza Through 2008, But Received “A Waiver To Join The Obama Administration.”  “Cecilia Muñoz, who was one of the lucky few lobbyists to get a waiver to join the Obama administration, is moving up from her position as the director of intergovernmental affairs to director of the Domestic Policy Council, the White House announced today. Muñoz was registered to lobby for the National Council of La Raza through the fourth quarter of 2008.” (Andrew Joseph, “Former Lobbyist Promoted at White House,” National Journal’s “Influence Alley,” 1/10/12)

As Obama’s Top Domestic Policy Advisor, Former Registered Lobbyist Cecilia Munoz Will Set The White House’s Agenda. “In her new role, she will oversee policy-making on a range of domestic issues, including education, energy and health care. She will continue to coordinate immigration policy for the White House.” (Laura Meckler, “Advocate For Hispanics To Join President’s Top Aides,” The Wall Street Journal, 1/10/12)
